This 24-hour sustainability festival takes place in several cities in Brazil throughout the year

Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, will host the first 24-hour sustainability festival of 2018, called Virada Sustentável. Virada is a mobilization movement for sustainability that organizes the largest festivals revolving around this theme in the country. It started in 2011 in São Paulo, but today it takes place country wide in Brazil. Different versions are already planned in Porto Alegre, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro this year, and will be featured in small towns too.

The thematic design of the Virada Sustentável is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), defined by the UN, which are also the principles that guide the festival’s program in all cities.

Virada Festival in Porto Alegre

The festival, Virada, in Porto Alegre takes place between April 6 and April 8, with free entry, however, registration is required. The event begins with the seminar “The importance of education for the development of sustainability”, which takes place on April 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Unisinos (Porto Alegre). The opening of the seminar – which marks the beginning of the event – will be held by Fernando Gabeira, a writer, journalist and former federal deputy. Gabeira is known for his environmental, cultural and ethical activism, on issues such as individual freedoms and ecology.

Porto Alegre’s Virada Festival has 35 registered attractions separated in 14 sections of subjects aligned to the UN SDGs. These are: Accessibility (SDG 11); Decentralized Actions (SDG 1); Wellness and sport (SDG 3); Cinema, literature and visual arts (SDG 11); Circus, theater and dance (SDG 11); Responsible consumption (SDG 12); Ecogastronomy (SDG 2); Education (SDG 4); Sustainable Entrepreneurship (SDG 8); Virada’s Women (SDG 5); Music (SDG 11); Our waters (SDG 6); Little Virada for Kids (SDG 16); Black voices (SDG 10).

As a result of the seminar, four materials will be produced – textual, visual and audiovisual contents – on the topics covered. The material will be available to teachers who wish to include sustainability in their classroom lesson plans. Those who participate in the seminar may request a digital certificate.

The second edition of Virada Sustentável in Rio de Janeiro will be held from June 8 to 10, 2018, in São Paulo which will host the third edition of the event in 2018 from August 23 to 26. Stay tuned for what is to come!
