Uniforms of ten teams participating in the 2018 Russia World Cup have 12 to 18 recycled plastic bottles in their composition

It’s no wonder that plastic serves as raw material for a huge range of products. We all know that it’s important to adopt a new behavior encouraging the smart consumption of this material. One of the most efficient ways of reusing it is recycling. Recycled plastic can be as useful as the original, and this shows on the field at the World Cup.

On Russia’s grounds, ten teams, including Brazil’s, have their players wearing uniforms with recycled plastic in their composition. According to Nike, manufacturer and developer of the technology, the material was used for both Fast Fit Vaporknit kits (used by Brazil, Croatia, England, Nigeria, Poland and Portugal) and Nike’s Match kits (used by Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea).

Around 12 to 18 plastic bottles were recycled for each of the 11 jerseys on the field. The process works as follows: the bottles are cleaned, broken into small flakes and converted into pellets that are then melted and processed into yarns, giving rise to the fabric.

The inclusion of recycled plastic is part of a Nike program that started in 2012 and has already reused about 5 billion plastic bottles.

Uniform of the Brazilian Team

In addition to being made with recycled yarn from plastic bottles, the Brazilian Team has a yellow color that is more vibrant in this edition than in other editions of the championship. Also, for the first time in 50 years, jersey number one has blue details.

In 2016, the first polypropylene and polyethylene resins, made from 100% recycled content, were developed. The planned production volume is up to 50 tons per month.
