Andressa Lucas and Lauren Menegon, from the Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg), in Brazil, created a bread recipe that has cockroach powder as one of its key ingredients. The idea came about after a public recommendation by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that argued for an insect rich diet. According to the UN organization, these animals are a source of protein substantially more efficient than beef and poultry. Cockroaches used are bred specifically for this purpose in controlled and aseptic environments by a company in Betim, in the state of Minas Gerais, also in Brazil.
